The Crystal Sentinel

Melinda discovers a world within a world in The Crystal Sentinel when she
travels with her mother Elaine to the far reaches of the frozen north. Again she will learn that ultimate power can be intoxicating for some and this time that power will be hers for the taking…

Everything was surreal in a place with 24 hour darkness. It had only been three days since their arrival and Melinda felt tired and confused; she never knew when she was meant to be awake or asleep, when it was time for breakfast or dinner. She sat up and clicked on the lamp and wondered why Maheetma chose to live in a place without sun.

When Melinda is left in this arctic wilderness alone, she is forced to use her Athenite skills to survive just as her ancestors had done…

As Elaine walked briskly towards their cottage, Melinda began to feel panicky. Less than a second later, the snow lifted off the ground in a powerful wind, being propelled in a circular current like a cyclone. More snow and debris was lifted by the powerful force, picking up speed and swirling around Elaine until she was completely hidden inside the funnel. Melinda’s mouth hung open and her eyes stretched so wide that it hurt. The cloud continued to billow for another few seconds then, as rapidly as it had formed it dissipated releasing all that it had carried. The air cleared slowly, leaving a fog for a few minutes as everything settled back to the ground. Everything returned to the way that it had been before except that Elaine was nowhere in sight.

Nothing could have prepared Melinda for the challenges that no twelve-year old should have to face, and no one could have explained the strange survival skills that she did not even know that she possessed…

It was as if time had stopped when she watched the red liquid ooze out of her body and soak into her white fur. She didn’t need to turn her head to see the Yeti on the other side of the steam cloud made by the heat of her own blood as it evaporated into the frigid air. Her knees buckled and she slumped forward until her face hit the ice. She had been blinded by white for such a long time that the blackness that followed was almost a relief.

The darkness brightened gradually as Melinda drifted upward, away from her Yeti body that was collapsed on the ground. Calmly she held her hands up to her eyes and wiggled her human fingers. It was odd, she thought, she didn’t remember transforming. She looked down at the rest of her body that was as human as her hands, but her skin was very pale and she was completely naked. She wondered how she could feel so warm without her heavy artic clothing, but the fact was that she was quite comfortable as she floated into the freezing mist. Tranquility washed over her the further she rose away from her transformed self and she smiled with acceptance, feeling that this was every bit as normal as anything else she had ever done.

Nor could anyone have forewarned her about the world that would become her kingdom if
she chose to accept it…

Melinda blinked several times, thinking that she could not really be seeing what she was seeing.  She had been in caves before and some of those had been extraordinary, but never in her life, not even in her wildest imaginings, could she have conceived of this place. This cave, located in a mountain in the most formidable environment that she had ever traveled, contained a bustling metropolis.
